So, just did the deed and signed up for Ironman Arizona next fall. First IM in 4 years.....

Totally different mindset now. Just wanna do it, no goals or expectations. With a family, my training will fit within that framework. We'll see how it goes Very Happy

Of course, we have a few races to organize too..... Very Happy

Good luck Keith - now you will know how we feel.
You just will not have the chance to do a race run by your crew to really appreciate the whole experience.

well, I got into doing this stuff BECAUSE I wanted to create that special feeling i've felt while racing.....

It'll be fun. I used to take it too seriously, now it's to prove that I'm not washed up at 40.... Very Happy

And have you undergone a cathartic cleansing as a result of signing up?

"....now it's to prove I'm not washed up at 40...."

This reminds me of a piece I saw on-line a few years ago, maybe on the D3 newsletter, with the title "The Aging Triathlete". I thought it might be really pertinent, as I was about 56 or so at the time. It turns out it was written by a guy who was 37. Sheesh! So, if he was considering himself an "aging" athlete, what did that make me? Well, "aged" at best, "one foot in the grave" at worst, I guess.

So, I'd like to say that I feel your pain about being 40, but from my weathered, beaten, bloody-but-unbowed (mostly) perspective as I turn 60 in January, 40 sounds GREAT!!! I doubt you're even remotely close to being washed up, and afterall -- don't you have a reputation of being a sandbagger par excellence?? Laughing

well, I know no tears will be shed now that I've turned the big 4-0, but it's still fairly traumatic for me Very Happy
